October is pregnancy and infant loss awareness month. This is meant for those who have experienced miscarriage, infant loss, and still born babies. But at this center, we see a large number of women who after having had an abortion, feel a sense of loss and sadness, and even experience long-term negative effects. According to a study done by Guttmacher Institute, between 33 and 41% of women feel regret concerning their abortion depending on the trimester.
Unfortunately these women are largely ignored, first by their religious setting if they have one, because it has often been uncouth to talk about abortion. Second by any institutions supporting abortion, because there is a fear that the progress abortion has made in legislation would be halted or undone if negative reports were to surface frequently.
There are an estimated 1,000,000 abortions in the United States every year. This means that approximately 330,000 women are don't have a safe place to tell their story and get the help they need. The path to healing starts with a safe place to tell our story without judgement.
At this center we have an abortion recovery program where someone who has had an abortion and needs healing can meet individually and confidentially with someone who has walked the same path and knows there is hope.
So let's add the women who have a sense of loss after abortion to our group for pregnancy and infant loss this month. They may need our support more than any others.
